SOIL: the LIVINg fOUnDaTIOn Of the gaRDen

When I got my first good look at the soil in the Learning Garden, and felt it with my hands, I was certain I could use it to make bricks, build a shelter, and fashion my own plates and cups. Heavy clay soils were what I was used to, so this was not my first rodeo, but I had a lot of work ahead of me.

Life on Earth is as dependent on soil as it is on air, water, and sunlight; soil is the foundation upon which terrestrial ecosystems grow. Healthy soil is a prerequisite for a healthy, abundant garden. Building and taking care of soil is the single most proactive thing a gardener can do to promote their garden’s success.
